This research is based on the models of Starr and Stinchcombe and Newhouse . It studies the emergence of commodity money under various conditions and its likelihood relative to the alternative of a barter equilibrium.  Subjects' patterns of trade are analyzed in a multi-period, pure exchange economy.  In the barter equilibrium all agents trade directly for their desired consumption goods.  In a monetary equilibrium all trade involves one good which becomes the medium of exchange.  The research addresses the learning behavior and equilibrium selection.
